Youth Food Movement

Slow Food on Campus and other Convivia

The Youth Food Movement is founded on the phylosophy of Slow Food.

As a member supported organization, Slow Food is organized around the world in the form of local chapters called convivia (singualar convivium). Each convivium is as unique as it's region it's in and the people, culture and food traditions there. What they all have in common is their desire to bring Slow Food to their communities, whether by seeking out local food producers and supporting them through projects, events or partnerships; starting up school gardens and educational programmes; organizing workshops, lectures, classes and conferences; or bringing together people to celebrate the joys and pleasures that food offers us.

With students in mind, Slow Food USA started a special programme called Slow Food on Campus - university based convivia. Slow Food on Campus members represent a passionate cross-section of youth addressing food issues, spanning environmental and social causes. Through creative and innovative events, projects, and programmes, students form around the world have the opportunity to lead the YFM within their countries.

Being located in an academic setting means these convivia are able to take advantage of the intellectual community and rescources surrounding them and to change the way students think about food in a wide variety of schools.

In collaboration with Slow Food USA, Slow Food International is working to support the development of the programme in other countries. As campus convivia sprout up around the world they all become part of the Youth Food Movement, creating more and more opportunities to share recources and ideas as well as collaborate on projects and activities.

Individually we can change communities; together we can change the world.

Already, Youth Food Movement members are:

  • Starting farms based on traditional methods and sustainable practices
  • Demanding food justice and equal access to good food for their neighbors
  • Starting farmer’s markets and gardens on campuses
  • Organizing Eat – Ins -  protest potlucks where good, clean, and fair food is prepared and shared in public spaces
  • Changing school cafeteria sourcing practices to local, sustainable products
  • Confronting agribusiness and demanding they change their production methods and workplace standards
  • And many more…
